Justin Timberlake's DWI Drama: 'SexyBack' Star's Lawyer Says Cops Made a 'Huge Mistake'
Justin Timberlake's legal team is striking back harder than a "Cry Me a River" chorus, disputing claims that the pop icon was intoxicated when he was arrested for DWI in June.
In a hearing held Friday, Timberlake's attorney, Edward Burke, emphatically declared, “The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI. The police made a number of very significant errors in this case.”
Burke continued, “Justin respects law enforcement and the very important job that they do. He cooperated with the police officers at all times and treated them with the respect they deserve. He also respects the entire judicial process including the District Attorney and Judge who were in court today. But the fact remains, he was not intoxicated and they made an error in arresting him for it. We are confident that this charge will be dismissed.”
The "Can't Stop the Feeling" singer was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York, last month while on tour for his latest album, "Everything I Thought It Was." Timberlake, who was not present at the hearing, has clearly hit a sour note with this incident.
According to police, Timberlake was observed driving a futuristic 2025 BMW in the early morning hours, allegedly failing to stop at a stop sign and struggling to stay in his lane. In court records, Timberlake reportedly admitted, "I had one martini and I followed my friends home."
However, a Sag Harbor Village Police Department officer described Timberlake as "unable to divide attention," with "slowed speech" and being "unsteady afoot." The officer also claimed Timberlake performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.
Despite the accusations, Timberlake's camp is singing a different tune, insisting that the charges will ultimately be dropped. The next act in this legal drama will be Timberlake's arraignment, scheduled for next month.
Stay tuned to see if Timberlake's lawyer can bring some "SexyBack" to his client's reputation or if this DWI charge will end up being the encore nobody wanted.
