Hello Kitty's Identity Crisis – She's a Girl, Not a Cat! Fans in Cat-astrophic Denial
Sanrio, the Japanese entertainment company behind Hello Kitty, dropped a bombshell for her 50th anniversary: Hello Kitty is not a cat but "a little girl." Yes, you heard that right.
Jill Koch, Sanrio’s senior VP of marketing and brand management, appeared on the Today show and dropped this revelation like a hot furball. She clarified that Hello Kitty, who “weighs three apples” and is “five apples tall,” grew up in the London suburbs with her twin sister, Mimmy, and their pet cat, Charmmy Kitty. Apparently, her hobbies include baking cookies and making new friends – because nothing says "little girl" like feline-sized pastries.
The internet, predictably, went into a tailspin. Fans couldn’t believe their whiskers. One X user, Carmen, declared, “Hello Kitty is a cat in my eyes.” Another user, atta (furnal equinox), raised an eyebrow at her London upbringing, asking, “Isn't Hello Kitty Japanese?” And Emily Lazar wondered if Hello Kitty has been LARPing as a cat all this time.
Meanwhile, fans remain in a collective state of denial, clutching their Hello Kitty plushies and refusing to believe their beloved feline friend is, in fact, a little girl.
